STAY INFORMED!- ACCURATE ECO NEWS


With all of the controversy that is surrounding the topic of "fake news" in mainstream media, it is important to know of reliable, accurate sources of information. Environmental news is extremely important in the modern world, as misinformation can lead to major repercussions. (News flash- climate change is real, and we have evidence to show for it).

Here's a quick list of reliable sources and interesting articles for perusing.

  • PRINT MAGAZINES:

A progressive magazine that speaks to the intersection between politics, the environment, and human rights, Mother Jones is known for its investigative journalism. With well researched and relevant articles, Mother Jones is a must-read.

Published by one of the nation’s oldest forestry schools, Yale Environment 360 is far from dated, with cutting edge commentary and research by journalists, scientists, environmentalists, academics, business people, and policy makers. This source gives in-depth information on a wide variety of topics.

We love the NYT’s climate and environment section! It reports on everything: scientific discoveries, political action (or inaction), activism, and social justice, so any type of earth-conscious reader will find something of interest.

They said it better than we could: “Founded in 1999, Grist is a beacon in the smog — an independent, irreverent news outlet and network of innovators working toward a planet that doesn’t burn and a future that doesn’t suck.” The original source of online environmental news, Grist does it better than anyone. PS- check out their list of kick-ass environmentalists.

In four minute segments, the Michigan Public Radio tackles bees to bears, roadkill, algae, energy and more. Although it is often Michigan-focused, it offers amazingly brief news-bits.

Facilitators of an expansive, solution-based dialogue on climate, energy, and the economy, all voices welcome at Climate One. This group hosts podcasts, videos, and in-site speaking events and are engaging as well as forward-thinking.

An award winning periodical on scientific research, Scientific American has great, accessible content on science and technology for the every-day reader. Check out their “Sustainability” section for science news surrounding the environment!

A great blog that focuses on out of this world tech- focused on saving the world! Featured technology ranges from wood usb-drives to wood sky-scrapers, beer-powered electricity to 50 acre green roofs- everything interesting, innovative, tech-y, and green.

Looking for beautiful prose on ecology? Poetic verse on ecosystems? Meditations on a dystopian future? Look no further. Since 1982, Orion Magazine has been publishing an expanse of environmentally-focused writing spanning from poetry to essay to short story. Although it is not a news site, it offers an important side to the discussion of our earth.

  • MARYLAND-SPECIFIC:

There is nothing more important than knowing about one’s own environment. While climate change is a global issue, it can be addressed on a local level. The first changes we can, and should, make are in our own back yard (or, in Maryland’s case, bay).

SAVE THE EARTH!

You've heard it everywhere. Humans are slowly destroying the Earth. The good news is that everyone can make a difference. What can I do?- you may ask. The easy answer is that there is always more to do; you can start by becoming involved on a local level. Go to ECo excursions, farmer's markets, and clothing swaps. It begins with you.
