One of the best things about hiking is its intrinsic flexibility. If you need a workout, hiking can whip you into shape. If you need some gentle time outdoors, a hike can fulfill your wish. A quick Google search will reveal many hundreds of blogs devoted to hiking, complete with gear reviews, accounts of trail experiences, and stories of adventures in the wild. While our hikes may not be as crazy, we can still reap the benefits of taking a break from the worldly stress around us and going off the beaten path- literally. Here at ECo, we take pleasure in hiking, and we know you do as well. These are some of our favorite local hikes.
1) Lake Roland
This easily accessible location is only two miles from BMS. A beautiful patch of wilderness off of Falls Road, Lake Roland Park has excellent hiking, biking, and running paths for all levels. In addition, Lake Roland has a lake for kayaking, a nature center, and playground area.
2) Loch Raven
An expansive hiking system near Dulaney Valley Road, Loch Raven Reservoir has over 60 miles of trails and 2400 acres of lake. Beautiful in all seasons, it is great for longer hikes. Loch Raven is perfect if you are looking to see a wide variety of resplendent species native to Maryland. Bald eagles are not uncommon in this area. Portions of the cult classic movie The Blair Witch Project were filmed at the Loch Raven reservoir, and it is rumored that a lost city, named Warren, lies beneath the reservoir's still waters. Highly recommended for any Halloween hiking. :)
3) Oregon Ridge
Oregon Ridge has over 1,000 acres of nature. Located in Cockeysville, MD, it hosts many annual events, as well as monthly recurring speakers. Oregon Ridge is deeply involved with the community, and offers volunteering opportunities as well as internships. Their Nature Center provides insight into the area's past in mining and iron furnace operations.
With 15 miles of trails, located in the middle of Baltimore City, the Gwynns Falls Trail is the perfect natural haven even for city residents. Combining urban and natural views, this trail network promises an unique experience and access to scenic Baltimorean views. Fishing in the stream is allowed. These trails are perfect for a day of outdoor picnicking and enjoying the outdoors.
Located right next to Gilman and Friends, the Stony Run Walking Path is the most convenient hiking spot near BMS. Although close to neighborhoods and roads, it still has a beautiful path and stream. Save fuel- walk here! Only 0.5 miles from Bryn Mawr, this is an appealing and time-saving option. Currently, the path is being transformed into a longer, continuous path, linking the areas from Cold Spring Lane to the Jones Falls.
We hope to see you out on the trails!
